Kumon Speed Reading System (S.R.S.)
Read English, in English.
Available in Japan
The Kumon Speed Reading System (S.R.S.) is a learning method of reading that helps students feel more familiar with English language in daily life.
Students acquire the skill of grasping the content of English texts while reading fast.
Using worksheets that help students acquire reading skills in a step-by-step manner, Kumon's learning system steadily changes students' way of reading English using an individualized self-learning method.
What is S.R.S.?
When reading English texts, many Japanese tend to unconsciously translate each word into Japanese while worrying about grammatical issues. S.R.S. is a learning method that makes students stop this grammar-translation during reading. It helps them acquire the skills to read English in English, in order to quickly grasp the overall meaning and to understand the writer's message.
As reading speed is considered an important element at S.R.S., students advance their study while timing their reading with a stop-watch. By reading the text in the order of the English language without stopping, they do not have time to replace the text with Japanese. Thereby, they learn to understand English in English.
Through S.R.S., students acquire the skills of English speed reading including phrase reading, keyword reading, and paragraph reading. They become able to enjoy reading a large volume of English text at a natural speed.
Once students obtain the necessary skills for English speed reading, they do not have to feel defensive in reading a large volume of English text. Just like reading Japanese, they become able to read English quickly and naturally.
Consequently, they can use these skills for taking TOEIC ®, TOEFL ®, and the Eiken English Proficiency Test, as well as for the entrance examinations of universities and graduate schools. Moreover, they will not feel reluctant to read a large volume of English text at work or during their research each day. They will come to enjoy reading English books, newspapers, and magazines in daily life. They free themselves from the mental process of English having to be translated. Instead, they become able to read English naturally, while thinking and feeling excited, by reading English in English as it is. As a result, students come to regard English as a part of their life and feel more familiar and closer to the language.
